what team will not likely make the stanley cup finals in five years?
what i mean is what team does not have a ears.shot in hell to make a run for the Stanley cup for the next few years or so, lets say 5 years from now. what is your opinion and why?
The Toronto Maple Leafs. They are a team in disarray. Their best player is almost 37 years old and will be an UFA at year’s end. He will probably stay but at a cost. They are handcuffed by lengthy contracts to McCabe, Tucker, Blake etc.
So, a team with such a bleak present must have a rosey future, right? Wrong. Justin Pogge is their best prospect and it a hit or miss, after that is is very thin. Tlusty could be decent,Robbie Earl could be a top six winger, and Nikolai Kulemin is a boom or bust prospect, Anton Stralman is the only D prospect worth noting. With a lack of draft picks over the past few years, depth remains an issue.
This is because they are always on the play-off bubbles and decide to be buyers instead of sellers.
Another reason is poor management. They are just an inane cast of characters.
You might say, look at Philly, they turned around an abysmal season in just one year, yes, BUT, they were set up with a good nucleus of young players, good prospects and expiring contracts to bring in fresh blood.
The only other team I see without a real bright future is TB. Brandon Sutter is the only prospect with a high likelihood of having a significant impact at the NHL level, and even he is not an elite prospect. They are ranked 30 out of 30 in terms of prospects. They are handcuffed with the deal to Richards and St.Louis (though he is a good player) and Lecavalier is an UFA after next season and could, pardon the pun, bolt. Prospal is an upcoming UFA and will probably be dealt at the deadline (heard the Wings).
Most other teams that don’t stand much of a chance this year have freat future talent which can make or break them……even Pheonix, LA, Washington etc have great prospects/young players to look forward to.
When you look at every team, there are young players to be really excited about. Toronto has none to be giddy about. TB has none to be giddy about.
